General driving rules theory test questions

The everyday rules of the road — junctions, overtaking, lanes and right of way. Practise 162 questions free, each with the correct answer and a plain-English explanation mapped to the Highway Code.

What you need to know

  • Only overtake when you can see it's clear and you can return safely.
  • Give way to traffic on a major road when emerging from a junction.
  • Use the Mirror–Signal–Manoeuvre routine for every change of speed or direction.

Sample question

Ordinarily, you use dipped headlights at night. When MUST you use dipped headlights in the daytime?

  • When you are parallel parking
  • When visibility is poor
  • When you are driving in a built-up area
  • When it is raining

Why

Although you may be able to see the road perfectly well, you also need to be seen by other drivers. You should use dipped headlights whenever conditions make visibility more difficult.

Common mistake

Signalling without first checking mirrors and blind spots — MSM order matters.

Exam tip

When unsure, pick the safest, most courteous option — examiners reward defensive choices.
