What you need to know

  • Keep a 2-second gap in the dry; double it to 4 in the wet, ×10 in ice.
  • Typical stopping distance at 70 mph ≈ 96 m (24 m thinking + 72 m braking).
  • Speed is a choice — adjust for weather, road and visibility, not just the limit.

Sample question

Is it legal for passengers to ride in a caravan that is being towed by another vehicle?

  • Yes, but only passengers aged 14 and over.
  • Yes, if there are no more seats available in the vehicle towing the caravan.
  • Yes, if a stabiliser has been installed on the caravan.
  • No, under no circumstances.

Why

It is against the law for passengers to be travelling in a caravan being towed by another vehicle. Should they move while the vehicle is in motion, it could endanger the stability of the caravan. And caravans typically do not have seat belts. Passengers would have no protection in the event of an accident.

Common mistake

Treating the speed limit as a target rather than a maximum for ideal conditions.

Exam tip

Memorise the 2-second rule and how weather multiplies it — it underpins many answers.
