Rules for At-Risk Road Users theory test questions
Protecting vulnerable road users — pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, horse riders and children. Practise 134 questions free, each with the correct answer and a plain-English explanation mapped to the Highway Code.
What you need to know
- Give cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as a car when overtaking.
- Leave 1.5 m when passing cyclists at up to 30 mph — more at higher speeds.
- Watch for children near schools, ice-cream vans and parked cars.
Sample question
If you are driving in strong winds and you want to overtake a motorcyclist, how should you go about it?
- Stay close to the motorcyclist at all times to protect the person from the wind.
- Pass at a low speed.
- Pass at a high speed.
- Overtake the motorcyclist, giving the person as much room as possible.
Why
By remaining as far from the motorcyclist as possible, you can avoid a possible collision caused by strong winds pushing the motorcycle off course.
Common mistake
Overtaking a cyclist too close or too fast — the Highway Code hierarchy puts their safety first.
Exam tip
Default to 'give more space and time' for any vulnerable user — it's almost always the right answer.
