First Aid on the Road theory test questions

What to do at the scene of an incident — keeping casualties safe until help arrives. Practise 15 questions free, each with the correct answer and a plain-English explanation mapped to the Highway Code.

What you need to know

  • DR ABC: Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation.
  • Don't move a motorcyclist's helmet unless their airway is at risk.
  • Keep casualties warm, calm and still; only move them if there's danger.

Sample question

There has been a serious accident, and you arrive on the scene first. What should you NOT do?

  • Give the injured something to drink.
  • Ask uninjured people to stay away from their vehicles.
  • Double-check that the emergency services have been contacted and an ambulance is on its way.
  • Activate your vehicle's hazard lights.

Why

The question is about what you should NOT do! The answer to that is 'Give the injured something to drink.' What you SHOULD do, however, is activate your hazard lights so other road users can proceed with caution. Keep all uninjured people away from vehicles involved in the accident, since there could be a risk of fire. Check that an ambulance is on its way. Do not give food or drink to an injured person; that can make some types of injuries worse.

Common mistake

Removing a crash helmet unnecessarily — leave it on unless the airway must be cleared.

Exam tip

Learn the DR ABC order — first-aid questions almost always follow it.
