Traffic Signaling Rules theory test questions

Traffic lights, signals and signs that give orders — and what to do at each. Practise 49 questions free, each with the correct answer and a plain-English explanation mapped to the Highway Code.

What you need to know

  • Red = stop; amber = stop unless you've crossed the line or it's unsafe to stop.
  • A green light means go only if your exit is clear.
  • Flashing amber at a pelican crossing = give way to pedestrians still crossing.

Sample question

A traffic light that is red and amber indicates that

  • the traffic light will soon be changing to red.
  • you must not proceed until the light is green.
  • the traffic lights are out of order; proceed with caution.
  • you can pass if the road ahead is clear.

Why

A red and amber traffic light means ‘Stop’. You should only proceed when green shows.

Common mistake

Treating amber as 'speed up to beat the red' — amber means stop where it's safe.

Exam tip

Drill the light sequence and the pelican flashing-amber rule — both appear often.
