What you need to know
- Tyres need at least 1.6 mm of tread across the central ¾, all the way round.
- Distribute and secure loads so they can't shift or affect handling.
- Remove valuables and lock up — never leave the engine running unattended.
Sample question
Excessive tyre wear can be caused by
- gearbox problems.
- headlight problems.
- a cracked window.
- suspension problems.
Why
Problems with the suspension can cause increased tyre wear.
Common mistake
Forgetting the 1.6 mm tread minimum or that an overloaded car handles and brakes worse.
Exam tip
Remember the tyre tread figure (1.6 mm) and 'secure the load' — both come up reliably.
